Lois Lane Comes of Age in a Gorgeous New OGN
Girl Taking Over: A Lois Lane Story is out in bookstores now.
DC Comics’ young readers line of original graphic novels has been bringing me joy ever since it launched under the now defunct banners of Zoom and Ink. These gorgeous stories give talented writers and cartoonists the space to reimagine some of our favorite heroes for a new audience — or readers like me who already love these characters and want to enjoy new iterations — in glorious fashion.
I’ve covered these books extensively in the past. You can check out my chats about Shadow of the Batgirl, Teen Titans: Robins, and many more in my portfolio. Girl Taking Over: A Lois Lane Story is the latest release from the line and comes from the stellar creative team of writer Sarah Kuhn and artist Arielle Jovellanos, along with gorgeous colors from Olivia Pecini and dynamic lettering by Melanie Ujimori.
To celebrate the book’s release — it’s out in bookstores today April 18th, the 85th anniversary of both Lois Lane and Superman — I’m sharing some beautiful preview pages and thoughts on this delightful coming of age story.
I was lucky enough to work with Arielle on a project that never saw the light of day, but it was a highlight of my career as she’s such a wonderful person and talented artist. Girl Taking Over showcases her dynamic and warm style perfectly as we meet a young Lois Lane on her quest to become a journalist and change the world.
Following Lois as she arrives in National City for a dream internship, this is the kind of comic that immediately grabs you. Arielle’s art balances the relatable and fantastic; this is a world you can imagine being in while also feeling deeply aspirational. Much of that is brought to life by Olivia’s vibrant colors that pop on every page.
As with all of her work, Sarah brings a heart and sweetness to Lois that shines from every panel. This Lois is intelligent, kind, and passionate; she’s also Asian-American. bringing a new dimension to the fan favorite character. The creative team build Lois and her world with texture and depth that makes both feel completely whole and new.
Bringing Lois’ world to life on every page, the creative team crafts something that feels totally unique but also very much in the realm of superhero comics you love. It’s a perfect jumping on point for new readers, and a dynamic and joyful expansion for those who already love Lois and the world of Superman. So this Superman (and Lois Lane) Day, make sure you check out this gorgeous new graphic novel.
What beautiful artwork, could go hand in hand with Barbie release.
